The band and Steven Page have both said recently that the opening single for E2E, Another Postcard was the wrong one. I think Steven Page had tweet conversation about how that single turned off people to one of their better albums. I personally agree with this statement. I find E2E was a great album and not many mainstream fans have given it a fair shake because of the single selection. Do you guys/gals agree? If so what would have picked? Or were you happy with the selection? If so, how come?
I like Maybe Katie as one, YES! YES! YES! as another (never thought it should have been cut), Testing 1,2,3 could have opened
Love to hear some thoughts

I LOVE Another Postcard, but I have to admit that it might not have the wide appeal, especially for listeners who aren't familiar with the band, that Maybe Katie or Testing 123 would have. Take It Outside might have been another good choice. But I get a foolish grin on my face every time I hear Another Postcard, and more often then not I'll hit the replay button when it's done.

I bet that the record company thought that "Another Postcard" was quirky enough to remind people of "One Week." "Maybe Katie" and "Testing 1,2,3" would have been better choices.

I love E2E. It's a fantastic album and it was the first "new" album to come out during my fandom, so it always will have a place as my first "anticipation building" BNL album (esp. now that leaks are so common between youtube videos and twitter and facebook and fan club. When E2E came out, we didn't have little video clips of all the songs to tease us or pre-album performances). The first real "leak" was the instrumental tracks on napster-like services which was amazingly cool, and then the album dropped and it was just a fresh hit of new great (very different) music.
I didn't see either the band or Page make the Postcard comments, but it's clear that the record company was strongly behind that choice. I have heard from someone (won't say who so I don't get them into any reprecussions for their statement) that E2E was the band's last album on Reprise, and so Reprise had a strong incentive to pick a BAD single so the band would do poorly and be cheaper to re-sign (which they didn't end up doing). An interesting theory.
I think everyone here knows AP was a terrible single choice - a 3-chorder with absolutely no substance and a bit of a thin musical track as well. It was a joke song which One Week was NOT. One Week had irrelevant verses, but they were countered by an actually interesting and meaningful and relatable chorus and a really cool backing track. Rapping BNL was a uniquity in 1998 (and sort of trendy). By 2003, it was not exciting anymore.
I always loved Testing at the time (it's gotten a bit old now, but it is 10 years old and I've gotten bored of a lot of singles) - at the time it was my favourite on the album and the catchiest and coolest track.
Maybe Katie was a good one, but I never thought it was the right "feeling" for a single - a bit mellow in groove, but certainly better than Postcard.
Upside Down is one of the most awesome songs Steve performs live and I thoguht THAT would have been a nice single choice.
Celebrity could have been a fair second single, and Yes Yes Yes had possiblities, although I'm not sure it was a first single (a little too heavy in message and all the political exposition to the song they'd have to do in interviews might not go over well).
If they were gonna do a "novelty" single off the album, I always thought Shopping would have been a better one. That's a super catchy song, has Blue Man Group on it (a great tie-in for promotion), had a great choreographed number around it, writes its own music video... had a cool interactive live outro... etc.

The band was asked this question during the Grinning Streak publicity online interactive interviews. There was a recent twitter exchange with fans and Steven about AP being the wrong choice. I asked what he thought but got no response. Upside down is a fantastic song by Steve, I can definitely see that being a single. I could also see For You being a good single. With the point for Yes Yes Yes being too political, wasn't the entire album their political album?

Maybe Katie. Until Grinning Streak was released, Maybe Katie was my all time favorite song, so I'm a bit biased. The whole album is terrific! It was released a week after my first son was born, so I've got a huge sentimental tie to this record, this time.

I always thought "Maybe Katie" would be a great, catchy single, but I'm not sure how successful that would've made the album. If "Testing 1-2-3" had been the lead single, I think the album would have done better. I believe "Celebrity" worked as a pretty successful single in Europe, if I recall correctly, maybe that would would've worked out too.

This Video (at 5:05) has the ladies discussing it. I tend to think Testing 1,2,3 would have been the perfect 1st single though I personally prefer Celebrity.

I can't believe no one has mentioned "For You". It would have been a great country station crossover.

I agree--love "For You"-but not at first,It was a little too "country" for me however seeing it live made me like it more.

I mentioned in another thread how For You grew tiresome on my after it got played everywhere, even though I don't hate the song. I don't see For You being a lead single from E2E for a few reasons (I also note that it WAS allegedly released as a single in North America - there's a promo CD - and apparently did nothing).
It's country cross-over nature doesn't represent the rest of the album (AP doesn't represent the album either, but I we all agree that was a band single choice anyway); if they put out For You as a single, and it actually DID gain country traction, I think country fans would have been disappointed by the album, being a fairly rock/pop album.
Secondly, and this is just my personal guess, I don't see For You being peppy enough to be a lead single. Especially not in 2003. MAYBE today in the world of Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers, For You fits the landscape a little more, but what For You lacks that most of the singles even from those bands have is a really driving beat (those single bass drums they use drive their songs with a heavy rock "punch" beat, while For You has a bit more of a bubbly, campfire kind of feel. If they added a bit more of that kicky bass, perhaps...

Now I *really* want to hear a version of For You with a heavier beat.

I thought AP was a poor choice for reasons mentioned earlier. I also remember some discussion on this during a cruise panel about this. Terry (McBride-former manager) took the heat for the decision. Terry said, "I stand by the decision. It went to X (don't remember the number) on the charts." I seem to remember the band also saying this, but couldn't give an accurate reference.
My choice as single would be Testing. It does much better homage to One Week and is catchy enough for single territory.
My personal choice would have been Upside Down. Soooooooooo awesome live. Jim rocks that tune.
Of course I love For You, but I think TheHypo was spot on with his comments there.

I agree that maybe the execs thought Another Postcard would remind listeners of the type of songs like One Week...I love Take It Outside, favourite track on E2E but maybe a little too country sounding to be a single...
