We all know how much the guys love changing the lyrics of songs when performing them live, versus what is on the album. We thought this would be a great place to share your favorite "changed" lyrics and report in when one of us hears a new one at a show. I'll start. The one I think I hear most often is in It's All Been Done. The album version goes "I met you before the fall of Rome And I begged you to let me take you home". The live version goes "I met you before the fall of Rome And I begged you to use contraceptive foam"! HA! Who else has one?

The only one I can really think of is when they cover Blinded By The Light and instead of saying, "she's gonna make it" Ed sings, "she's getting naked." I've never had the pleasure of seeing them do "It's All Been Done" live - I'll bet the woo-hoo-hoos from the audience are deafening. :-)

My favorite recent one, "Life in a Nutshell" with Ed signing lead: -Original "When she was 3, her barbies always did it on the first date. Now she's with me, there's never any need for them to demonstrate." -Better "When she was 3, her barbies always did it on the first date. Now she's with me, there's never any need for her to her to masterbate." (There's a YouTube video of that somewhere...)
My favorite old school, from a 1995 show in Lowell, MA. $1,000,000 ending with: -"If I had a million dollars, some sonofabitch would die!" (reference to Bruce Cockburn's "If I Had a Rocket Launcher.")
Does anyone else remember the lyric variations site that used to collect all these? So fun!

There's a million of them. I have to say that I'm not as big of fan of ones used to make dirty jokes (as Ed tends to) as much has ones to, for example, make pop culture references like the Bruce Cockburn one.
Also around 1994, they used to put in Million Dollars instead of "I'd buy your love...", they'd use "I'd dance with wolves..."
I'm sure we all know the various John's who have replaced John Merrick ("I'd by you John Tesh's remains" "Oh all them enterainment tonight quittin' guy bones")
And "Emu" was replaced by "Alpaca" for a while. Steve used to follow "I'd be rich" with both "Rich Little" and "Rich and creamy" at different times
Hello City, the "mock turtleneck" was almost always a "Gap turtleneck" - not known if that was something they changed just for the album to avoid using the store name on the recording or if it occured to him later.
Similarly, in Box Set, he often sang "You can put it on a Time-Life compilation, that's alright"
Pinch Me is obviously well-known for lyric swaps, be it "Change in to my sister's clothes" or occasionally something more topical to that particular show; and of course, "I just made you throw underwear"
In When I Fall, in the last few years, Ed has change "I can't look below me; did he just say 'blow me'?"
He also didn't make the change but noted once that in his mind he always hear's the end of Falling for the First Time as "Maybe the worst is Bahai" and imagines having just run off a list of faiths in his head, ending with Bahai as the worst.
Grade 9 has had some tweaks by several of the band members. Notable ones that lasted more than one time include "I guess I should have studied 'stead of rocking Chakah Khan" and "I put them on and I went to the south of France"
To name a few...

IIRC, they changed Hello City to Gap Turtleneck after Sharon Stone famously wore one to the 1998 Oscars. Before that I seem to remember it just being Mock.

I always enjoyed the Alternative Girlfriend lyric change of "I'm and undercover cop/I make sure the customers aren't Steve."

dawezl, no I'm pretty sure Gap Turtleneck dates all the way back to the early 90s; but let me check... * Barenaked Recess just has "my turleneck" * Variety Records has "mock" * June 1991 show has "mock" * Nov 1991 show (Danforth Music Hall - Ladies Room CD) has "Gap" * Aug 1992 show has "mock" * Apr 1993 Massey show has "Gap" * Rock Spec, in fact, has "Gap", so definately pre-1998 Among others. I haven't heard him sing "mock" live on very many recordings. It clearly predates Gordon, but it's back and forth in the early days, and no official recording has it until Rock Spec (which was a live album)...

Lol, thanks for checking. I was going off my memories of shows, and as an old weasel, "reliable" is probably not the first word that jumps to mind.

Ed does seem to do a lot of dirty ones, but I prefer the little things Kevin changes in IIHAMD when he sings it. Like sometimes he changes the animal from emu to badger or a different animal and instead of "You could help, it wouldn't be that hard" he once sang, "You could help, I'd appreciate that." I don't know, they're not particularly funny but I enjoy watching the other guys light up when they're caught off guard by a line change.
