Hey everyone,
I was just curious if anyone else has had any mishears in BNL songs? You know, those embarrassing moments when you are singing "your version" and someone says, "Uh, hello, that's not what is being said?" Well, I have quite a few and I was wondering if anyone else has any. Here are some of mine...
- In "When I Fall" I always, always thought Ed was saying, "It's not pointing straight down..." instead of "It's 9.8 straight down..." I just always heard it that way...
- One of my favorite lines that I had a huge mishear with comes from "Same Thing" You know that part about the comic book store... The line that goes... "I'm in a comic store lookin' for some mistakenly priced comic I could make a fortune on..." Well, um, I uh thought for years that what was actually said was... "I'm in a comic store, lookin' for a mistake in a Lee Price comic that I could make a fortune on..." So how I found out I was very wrong was when I asked my comic book aficionado hubby the question, "Well, who is Lee Price and what did he make? Because I guess if you find a mistake in his comic, you can make some loot!" My hubby's face was pretty priceless like what the $#%&% are you talking about? And that's when I looked up the lyrics and said... Ohhhhh, that makes sense now...
- A real popular misunderstanding comes from "Old Apartment" I actually come to find out that some others have also thought, "The Danforth" was the name of a river somewhere... (It's a street in TO, it's all good, we get it now... )
- Going along with the previous misperception... From "One Week," I thought Swiss Chalet sold cheese... yep... Just assumed it was a cheese store. (After learning what it was, I would like to eat there someday.)
So, what are some of your mishears or misperceptions?

Haha I've had many over the years, too. Like in "Adrift" I always thought they said "Your heart's got a heavy glow, there's still a long way to go" (which, to me, made perfect sense) when the lyric is really "Your heart's got a heavy load...." Also, until recently I could never make out the lyrics in "Light Up My Room" when Ed sings "The foam on the creek is like pop and ice cream." I've listened to this song a million times and finally had to look up the lyrics because it was driving me crazy! There are others for sure, but those two stand out for me. |

You know what @erinsi? I didn't think he was saying "Pop and ice cream" in "Light Up My Room" either, I had to check as well... I also want to say there are alternate lyrics to "Adrift" as well? (going along with another thread) I think maybe just a change in "mind's got a heavy load" to "heart's got a heavy load." Very interesting stuff! |

I have been singing a line in One Week wrong for years. I've been saying "Keanu Reeves films; But if I did they'd have a Samurai". I thought why not with everything else going on in the song. It wasn't until a recent interview with Ed that I found out that it was "Okay, I don't make films; But if I did they'd have a Samurai". I burst out laughing when I read it. I've been saying it wrong for so many years though, it's hard for me to get it right now.

One my sister finds particularly amusing was what I thought they sang in Alcohol when I was younger, about alcohol being a POTTY time necessity. To be fair, I was 9 when Stunt came out!

Not actually BNL, but Jim Creggan. My wife always thought Jim said "you will be a door" instead of Adored!

In Never Is Enough, "You eat the bivalve anyway" to me had always been "You beat the Bible anyway, you're sick with salmonella." Even right after "The world's your oyster shell," it never clicked. In my defense, how often does bivalve come up in conversation?? :-)

Another one from Stunt--In Who Needs Sleep? the lyric is "Who needs sleep? Be happy with what you're gettin." I'd always thought it was "Who needs sleep? A half a wink is what you're gettin." Until I saw them up close, and thought to myself, "Wow, Ed's getting his words wrong," I was pretty convinced I was right. This song was what I listened to on end when my younger son was a baby, since he NEVER slept and thus neither did I! I still think my lyrical twist works though!!

I am so glad that I was not the only one to hear some of these lyrics wrong! One I JUST learned yesterday from folks responding on Twitter was the actual line of "You beat the Bible anyways". I always thought it had something to do with eating the bi-valve. There is always something to learn! |

For the longest time when hearing Adrift, I thought
There's still a long way to go
Keep your eyes on the "moon"
instead of road.
Made perfect sense to me as the moon would be a horrible navigational aid for someone lost.
