I was searching podcasts for BNL and found this episode of "Comedy on Vinyl" in which Gordon is the central focus. They talk about how the guest (DC Pierson) was obsessed with the album when he was in grade school. Neither the guest nor the host was that familiar with BNL (not even knowing the band members names) but it was interesting to hear them discuss the album anyway. That brings me to my question. I didn't think Gordon was ever released on vinyl. When it was released in '92, CDs and cassettes had pretty much replaced vinyl as music media. A search of eBay, Amazon, and discogs.com doesn't turn up anything for Gordon on vinyl. So, how are they holding up what looks like a vinyl LP of Gordon in the pic on that podcast page? I tried tweeting DC Pierson about where he got it, but didn't get a response. Any ideas? Here's the link for the podcast: stolendress.com/comedyonvinyl/wordpress/wordpress/451/

I think the image is Photoshopped, using the original CD sleeve, but blown up to look LP sized. The "LP" seen in the photo appears to my eye as too clear, without a hint of ambient light or reflection, as would be seen in a proper photo holding an actual record sleeve. Also, the fellow's thumb (next to Tyler) doesn't seem to be pressing into anything. I'd guess the two guys posed and inserted the "LP" after. It was made LP sized in order to be recognizable. A CD in his hand would be smaller and harder to promote. In my research for my book The Barenaked Ladies Chronology ( tinyurl.com/loyvktc) I found no reference to or listing for Gordon on vinyl. If there had been, with the original sleeve, it would have been released between 1992 and 1996, before the new cover art came into use. As you say, CDs and cassettes were the thing at that time (and cassettes were on their way out) and only in the last 5 years or so has the format made a big comeback. There's no evidence of an LP re-issue either (though that wouldn't be a bad idea for BNL, Gordon on vinyl limited edition). Hope that helps! Cheers, Patrick

Thanks for the info! What you've suggested makes sense. I didn't notice before but upon closer inspection it's clearly a Photoshop. I guess since the podcast is "Comedy on Vinyl" they had to make it look like it was a record to keep with the theme of the show. I kind of wish they hadn't though, it gave me a false impression and led me on a wild goose chase for no good reason.
I'm too young to have been around for vinyl (being 35, I missed it being the main music medium by a few years). I grew up with music on cassette, and by the time I really started getting into bands in around 1992, CDs were starting to take over. I didn't get into BNL until 1996, and I remember seeing both covers for the Gordon CD. By the time I was ready to purchase it, there was none of the original cover left, so I had to go with the Pepsi ball (I still regret not getting the original cover to this day).
In the past couple of years I've been getting into the vinyl resurgence. I mostly collect old '70s prog rock, but for BNL I got Grinning Streak on vinyl and also a few BNL single 45s on eBay. It's definitely a fun hobby.
Congrats on the book... it looks very thorough and well researched. I checked out the free sample and already learned a lot of things I didn't know. The price tag is a bit steep for me, though. Any chance of releasing a cheaper digital version at some point?

Thought so!
I'll look into a Kindle Edition for the Chronology, too. Good idea!

You're welcome!
Help spread the word about the book if you can, too (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). I think a lot of BNL fans will enjoy it!
:-)
